Well, there’s a short answer and a long answer. Today I’ll give you the short one. I write to inspire people to follow their dreams and to share stories. Whether it’s fictional, real, or simply a dream, everyone has a story to tell.
Recently, I spoke at the Young Author’s Conference in Colorado. While there, I had a brainstorm of sorts. And the problem with me is that when I have an idea, I have a tough time not sharing it… so I shared it with one school. I invited them to collaborate with me on my next middle grade adventure series.
What does that mean exactly? Well, at that particular assembly, I had them name a couple of characters and describe a scene for me. Since then, I’ve shared how to outline a book and break it up into workable chapters. This summer I’ll be busy writing the first draft, but when school get s started again, I’ll share that with them as well as the pain and struggles of editing. They’ll be key in helping to design the cover as well as vote for the final choice. Through this process I hope they’ll have a better understanding of how to write a book, the work and effort that gets put into it, and feel more connected to the literary world.
I am excited to start this journey with these students. When it comes down to it. Everyone has a story, everyone has a voice, and when we work together, AMAZING things can happen.
So… now I am off to write Initiation, Book One of the Sky Raiders Trilogy. Wish me luck!!!
