Let's see what kind of tidbits we can learn about her and her books.
Did you always want to be a writer?
My earliest recollection related to writing is age 8. I read C. S. Lewis’ The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and from that point on I knew I was going to write a children’s book that followed Lewis’ style with allegorical mixed with other layers in a fantasy world.
What inspires you to write?
On one level, reading fantasy adventure novels inspires me to write. I enjoy the worlds others create and I want to add my own twist for my readers. At another level, I write because I am passionate to share uncommon principles that made my life significantly more peaceful and meaningful with my readers. In so doing, I hope to introduce them to these principles so they can lead more enjoyable lives as a result. A few of these uncommon principles include overcoming frustration, impatience, fear, and jealousy. As well, they include understanding why it makes practical sense to tell the truth, and understanding that success in life comes from responsibility, diligence, dignity to name a few.
Yes. I start with exercising in the morning. As I exercise, I think through the section of the book that I plan to write that day. I brainstorm ideas and ‘what if’ scenarios. I then work on marketing for a couple hours including social media and other opportunities to make others aware of my work. Around two o’clock I then turn my attention to writing what has been ruminating all day as I’ve been doing other things. I write for 3-4 hours. That’s usually my max before my brain sends up the white flag of surrender.
What is the current book you are promoting?
On January 27th, I published the second book in the Andy Smithson series, Venom of the Serpent’s Cunning. Book 3, Andy Smithson: Disgrace of the Unicorn’s Honor will come out in the Fall of 2014.
Can you describe your main character for us?
The series hero is named Andy Smithson. In book 2, he is now eleven and is an unremarkable boy - brown hair, brown eyes, average nose, average chin (nope… no whiskers yet). His pediatrician had called him “small for his age”, a fact that his sister, who is two years older, reminds him of. That, and the fact that he doesn’t appreciate his parent’s continual promptings about being respectful and responsible make him a very relatable kid. The only thing that might make some consider him ‘different’ is the fact that he is the Chosen One to break a 500-year-old curse that plagues the land of Oomaldee and as a result, he keeps being drawn there. He battles dragons, giants, vulture-beings, and more as well as an evil shape-shifting king who is obsessed with regaining eternal life and ruling that world.
